Brumberg uses scientific findings

Sundern, July 2016. An intelligent home increases the quality of living and life. It saves time, energy and it is safe. But the SmartHome can be not only comfortable, but also extremely healthy. That is, if it is equipped with lights that support the human biorhythm and thus have a positive effect on hormone release and mood: Brumberg's innovative vitaLED^® 2.0 lighting technology does just that. To achieve this, Brumberg has used the scientific findings of the South Westphalia University of Applied Sciences and incorporated them into its own developments. "vitaLED^® 2.0 fundamentally enables energy efficiency to be improved and resources to be conserved, while at the same time increasing the quality of light. It increases the quality of life because it can support the human biorhythm," explains Prof. Dr.-Ing. Ulrich Kuipers, head of the research focus "New Lighting Technologies" at the University of Applied Sciences Südwestfalen.

vitaLED^® 2.0 enables spectral light control

Studies conducted in cooperation with the University of Applied Sciences of South Westphalia show that people can feel better in a room illuminated with RGBW colored light than in conventionally monochromatically illuminated rooms. Which light intensity and color are perceived as pleasant is not only subjective, but also a question of the time of day.

Individuality and flexibility are thus becoming increasingly important in lighting. "New lighting technologies with LEDs enable, in addition to considerable savings in electrical energy and the reduction of CO₂ emissions, the realization of healthy light that positively influences people's well-being and performance," explains Prof. Dr.-Ing. Ulrich Kuipers. He continues, "This requires a lighting system that modifies artificial light throughout the day, following the example of natural light." vitaLED^® 2.0 enables such, spectral light control. Blue-sensitive photoreceptors on the human retina control the production of important hormones in the brain such as melatonin and serotonin, as well as cortisol. The "sleep hormone" melatonin makes us tired and lowers activity, cortisol is a "stress hormone", serotonin has a mood-lifting and motivating effect.

Variable blue light

One key to success with vitaLED^® 2.0 lies in the white light: its variable blue light component can positively influence people's moods: The production of human hormones in the head is controlled by blue components in the light. Cold light has very high blue components, it has an activating effect, melatonin production is suppressed, and in return serotonin concentration increases. Warm light has few blue components and high red components, it has a calming and relaxing effect. Under these conditions, it is possible for the light to unfold its scientifically proven effect and provide a pleasant, natural atmosphere.

Hormone control positively influenced

The newly developed vitaLED lighting technology provides a pleasant and natural color and white light. In addition to the RGB color space (red, green, blue), the entire range of white light from 2,000 to 10,000 Kelvin can also be continuously adjusted here. "With a time-of-day-dependent - i.e. circadian - control of the light spectra and light colors, modeled on natural daylight, positive, non-visual lighting effects are utilized. Human hormone control can thus be positively influenced," says Prof. Dr.-Ing. Ulrich Kuipers.

The SmartHome can also be designed completely individually with vitaLED^® 2.0: vitaLED^® 2.0 creates a new variety of luminaires as well as new design possibilities with downlights in different sizes and shapes.
