History and development
In 1873 the merchant Hermann Josef Brumberg, born in an old peasant and trader family, founded the metal ware company bearing his name as one of the first industries in Sundern.
In Neheim, near Sundern, oil lamps were already being produced for the ore mining in the Sauerland area. As a result, the company added accessories for oil lamps in 1875, and later changed to the complete production of oil lamps.
In 1890 a flood disaster in the valley of the Röhre river ruined almost the whole production.
1892The second generation
After the death of the company’s founder in 1892, his son Josef managed the business successfully. By the end of the 19th century, the considerable range had an excellent reputation within the lighting branch.
1914Fire destroyed plants
1914 a large fire destroyed all the factory buildings. The First World War and the subsequent economic crisis were difficult, but all these problems were overcome.
1933The third generation
After some setbacks the sons Josef and Walter Brumberg took over the company in 1933.
1945The Second World War
During the Second World War the production was compelled to be changed for German Armed Forces needs. This implicated the clearing of the factory buildings by order of the occupying power in 1945.
1950A fire again
In 1950 another fire destroyed the company, including its most important documents, files, and design drawings. Nevertheless, the company made a recovery.
1972The fourth generation
The company was passed to the brothers Hermann Josef and Johannes Brumberg in 1972.
Due to an economic crisis, associated with differences the Josef Brumberg lighting company was liquidated
in 1985. However, in the same year the new founded Brumberg Leuchten GmbH & Co. KG continued with the family’s tradition.
Johannes Brumberg jr., bachelor of commerce, supported his parent’s enterprise after he successfully
finished studies of business administration in Münster and Hannover.
